ROUTINES (CLASSROOM & SCHOOL), ETC.
-lots of info for new Kindee families
Parking - please be patient! Our parking lot, like most schools, gets very busy. The church parking lot is reserved for families of Kindergarten and Grade One students only. When entering the church parking lot please stay to the right and circle around. Please park as close as you can to the next vehicle as there are 170 children being picked up. There are also some parking spots available in the front of the school. PLEASE BE PATIENT. Please see the PAC website for more information.
Parent Helpers - We are hoping to welcome parents and parents helpers back into the building this year. I will keep you posted.
Mail Bags - your child will be bringing home a MAIL BAG (freezer bag) that will need to travel back and forth to school each day (even if it is empty) and be put in our MAIL BASKET. The MAIL BAG is used to return forms, book orders, collections, notices to you and to me, etc. The MAIL BAG is an important part of our daily routine so please ensure the MAIL BAG is emptied at home each night and that it is returned to school the next day.
Km Club - The Kindees run on our outdoor track two times a week (weather permitting). Laps are tallied and added together after each KmClub. 4 laps = 1km Children earn a little foot charm for each 100 laps (100 laps = 25km). Children keep their charm collection on little chains on their backpacks to show off all their little foot charms.
100 laps (25km) = red foot charm 200 laps (50km) = orange foot charm 300 laps (75km) = yellow foot charm 400 laps (100km) = green foot charm 500 laps (125km) = blue foot charm 600 laps (150km) = teal foot charm 700 laps (175km) = purple charm 800 laps (200km) = pink charm Sports Day, House Teams & Events
Students will be divided into house teams: Canadians (red, or red & white), Canucks (blue, or blue & green), Lions (black&orange), Whitecaps (white or white & blue). Sports Day is usually held near the end of June. The day is full of fun events: beginning of the day to lunch time is packed with different stations that each team participates in. Each class travels as a group from station to station. It is quite an active, exciting and tiring time so after lunch the Kindees stay inside in our classrooms to do some fun, quiet activities. The PAC supplies a lunch for all the students. We usually need a number of parent volunteers to help make this day successful. Playgrounds - there are RULES for each playground before and after school. Please check back later for updated information.
Kindergarten Homework - I send home monthly homework calendars with little daily activities for you to complete with your Kindee. The calendars get returned to me at the end of each month. There is no need to return any "work" to school. I will record and then return the little calendars to you.
Medication and Illness - teachers are not allowed to give medication to students. If your child requires medication at school (for any reason) please take it directly to the school office and speak with the administration assistant or the principal.
PLEASE SEE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND PROVINCIAL GUIDELINES IF YOUR CHILD IS ILL. PLEASE REFER REGULARLY TO THE HEALTH CHECK FORM. If there is any doubt whether to send your child to school, it is probably best to keep him or her at home. Children who have a fever of 100*F or greater should be kept home for 24 hours after they are fever free without the use of fever-reducing medications. This not only benefits your child but other children and staff in the school. If your child is going to be absent, please call the school by 8:30 am. |
Morning Line-Up - children line up by the classroom windows when the first bell rings. Children are expected to wait quietly for the outside classroom door to open.
Dismissal - children will only be dismissed to their parent or caregiver after school unless you have made prior arrangements with me or have called the office. It is very difficult for me to check emails or answer the phone near the end of the day as this is a very busy time for us. If there is someone other than yourself picking up your child please let me know (and your child, too, if you can) and ensure that I, or the school, have the current contact information.
Supplies - your Kindee will need inside shoes that stay at school and a manageable regular size backpack (not a smaller pre-school size). If your child is not able to tie please do not send shoes with tie-up laces. Shoes need to be runner type with non-marking soles as these shoes will be worn at gym time as well as in our classroom. Please have your child's initials somewhere on these items.
Kindees will also need a shoebox. The box can have a hinged or loose lid. I will send home more information about consumable school supplies for Kindergarten students. We are a "NUT AWARE SCHOOL" - many children have severe, life-threatening peanut/nut allergies in our school. It is important to send lunch and snack items that are free of peanuts/nuts or peanut/nut products. Please check food labels and if you are unsure about a product, choose something else.
Hot Lunch & Treat Days - We are not yet sure or how our hot lunch program will work this year. Regardless, families will need to still register at: www.hotlunches.net (See FIRST KINDEE NEWS for code.) for PAC news and information. This website is used for many other things than hot lunch. Information is deleted at the end of each school year so families need to re-register each new school year.
Lunch & Snack Ideas (complied by the Kindees)
Lunch and snack times are opportunities to practice and set sound nutritional habits. Please try to make your child's snacks and lunches as healthy and nutritional as possible. Please do not send Lunchables, Snackables, juice boxes, flavoured water, tube yogurt or fruit snacks, candy or chocolate bars. Water is available in our classroom for drinking. Kindees can keep a labeled "cubby cup" at school. Also please try to make your lunch as "littlerless" as possible, too, by using reusable containers instead of baggies, etc. If you have any good ideas please email me. :) Tired of packing the same old lunch? The Kindees have put together their favourite lunch and snack ideas. Remember to please be as "litterless" as possible. Lunch - wraps cut into bite size pieces, cucumber & cream cheese sandwiches, big rice cakes with cream cheese and jam, sandwiches cut into strips... (thermos ideas) - chicken noodle soup, alphaghett, milk for container of cereal, protein shake or smoothie, cream of mushroom soup Snacks - goldfish crackers, yogurt covered raisins, sliced apples or pears sprinkled with cinnamon (hides the brown too), pickles, dry cereal, (more to come) Birthday Parties and Invitations - if your child is having a birthday party I don't mind giving out the invitations if invites are for the the whole class or for all the boys or for all the girls. If invites are for just a few classmates then you will need to hand them out on your own. Please do not send treats or goody bags to school for your child's birthday.

Attendance - it is very important that your child attend school regularly to obtain the maximum benefit from our Kindergarten program. Try to schedule long family holidays for later in the year or during regular holiday times. Please ensure that your child arrives to school on time. If your child is going to be absent you must contact the office (604.530.9973). If you are late to arrive at school you may require a late slip if the attendance has already been completed. (If you are late please do not drop your child off at the door without checking in with me.) If your child is ill or has a temperature please keep your child at home. Please see FIRST KINDEE NEWS for more detailed information regarding an ill child.
PAC - The Parent Advisory Council is an extremely important part of Langley Fundamental Elementary School and plays a very active role throughout our year. The school can not be managed without a strong parent support group. Please consider being involved and an active part of the PAC.
*note - current pac newsletters are not on district website -please go to www.hotlunches.net
Special Helper Days - Each day we have a new special helper. Our special helper will lead us throughout daily calendar session (*and will get to show us a special item brought from home...still working on this routine). Our list goes alphabetically and your Kindee will get a "guessing bag" the night before their turn*. Your Kindee will need to pick out something special that they would like to have us "guess". Please make sure your Kindee knows what letter sound the item starts with and where the item came from (Christmas present, gift from Auntie, etc). The item will be out on display for the day.
Christmas Concert - we usually put on 3 different shows so that most parents can come and watch. Visitors need tickets (free) in order to see a concert. There will be special notices that come home letting parents know to send in their requests for tickets.
The Gift Shoppe (formerly Mother's Day Store/Father's Day Store) - the Gift Shoppe committee works very hard all year long to collect new items for our annual shop for Mother's Day & Father's Day. In May the multi-purpose room gets turned into a little store where students can come and buy something for mom. In June the same thing happens for Father's Day. All items are usually under $5.
School-Wide Library Reading Program - this is a very important part of our school program. It is important to set up healthy routines around homework and reading…so...we start in Kindergarten. Each year our library has a different school wide theme to help encourage home reading routines. This important program runs October - April. (I provide calendars for May and June in case you want to continue.) Paper calendars will be sent home each month. Extra calendars can be found on this website for download. Reading minutes are recorded each day and then parents tally these minutes and return the paper calendars to school. Awards are given for most minutes read at the end of our year.
Newsletters - a school newsletter should be emailed every other Thursday. Sometimes the Kindergarten students do not follow all that is published so make sure to check the website calendar and your emails for updates. I keep our current year newsletters under Extras & Info (LFE School Newsletters tab). You can find all past newsletters (from previous years) on the school website.
